Message: "Common Finnish name Eino"

Common Finnish name Eino

Hi Guys-

So i never much worried about what my grandpa's name meant, because it is such a common name where i come from (UP of Michigan). Also, i was told once that it meant hero, but i realised later whomever told me that was confused about the name Urho, who is a character in the Kalevala, and has a pretend holiday named after him, the day before St Patrick's. I think St. Urho drove all the grasshoppers out of Finland with a drum. Tee hee.

Anyway, i can't find a meaning for the name Eino on any of the name related sites. Does anyone speak enough Finn to send me in the right direction, regarding what the word root might mean? None of my searches in Finnish-English dictionaries have come up with any words with that root.

Hi Khayeth,

The Finnish name Eino derives from an Old German name Aginwald (via the forms Enewald / Einewald / Einald). The meaning is "sword" and "ruler".

But Eino is used as a pet form for the names

- Einari (Finnish form of Einar)
and
- Einokki (Finnish form of Enoch)

as well.

Eino could be (and it probably is) a Finnish form of Einar "created" at the end of the 19th century.

Einar (m)

Derived from the Old Norse elements einn "one" and herr "army, warrior".

Both of those themes will be excellent to work with, as we already have two Franks (spear) to name people after. Martial themes will rule :)
