The writer's full name was Samuel Dashiell Hammet. Dashiell was his mother's maiden name. On the name itself:
-- Wikipedia claims that Dashiell is an anglicized form of the French De Chiel: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dashiell_Hammett
-- Ancestry.com claims that Dashiell is a Scottish last name: http://www.ancestry.com/search/SurnamePage.aspx?sourcecode=13452&html=a&fn=&ln=dashiell&submit.x=0&submit.y=0
I don't know which one is correct, but you might want to try the surname messageboard next door: http://surnames.behindthename.com/bb/list.php?board=sur

The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we ALL believe that we are above average drivers.
