Sofian.
When I went to get myself something to eat at McDonald's today, one of the employees was a young man (not older than 20 years) whose name tag read Sofian. He was dark-haired, with brown eyes and a slightly darker skin than normal, which made me think he might be of Greek ancestry (or otherwise Arabic or Moroccan).
I thought his name might be short for Sofianus (which would be a variant spelling of Sophianus), but I'm not sure. Research on Google learns me that most bearers of this name seem to be of Arabic or Moroccan ancestry. So what would the etymology and meaning of this name *really* be then?
Thank you in advance for any information you can give me. :)

Sofian is a variant form of the Arabic name Sufian (many different spellings, Suffian, Sufjan etc.) which is related to Sufism
