My boyfriend's family is Greek , and when his great grandparents came here from Greece they shortened their last name. Does anyone know where we can look up the real last name>? The shortened last name is Dardas. His family just recently found out the name was shortened and can't seem to get in touch with anyone who knew the real last name. Any websites or anything that can help????

If they came through Ellis Island, you can check their website to see if it lists their original name. Go to www.ellisisland.org.

I don't know much about this other than that it's a common practice. However, here is one place you could look:

It's basically a list of Greek surnames collected by someone interested in names. Looking at the 'shapes' of Greek surnames may give you some idea of where to start. Good luck! :-)
