Some French Names
I was wondering if anyone knew the meanings of the following French names:
FEMALE:
Celimene
Eliante
Arsinoe
MALE:
Alceste
Philinte
Oronte
Acaste
Clitandre
Also, does the male French name Dubois mean "From the woods"?
All of these names are from the play "The Misanthrope" by Moliere, if anyone cares. :)
Thanks!

At the time Moliere lived, there was a fashion of Greek names/nicknames (generally of nymphs and other smaller Greek deities/semi-deities and mythologycal beings), which of course got "frenchised".
Try to find a biography of Louis XIV.
Or the 3rd sequel of Dumas's musketeers. You might even like that more.

They're all Greek to me...
Try Googling them as:
Celimene, Elianthe, Arsinoe;
Alcestes, Philinthus, Orontes, Acastus, Clitandros/Klithandros.

Most of them look Greek to me, but with a French spelling - Oronte has to be Orontes, for instance.
Dubois (pr. dy-BWAH) means "of the woods, of the forest" in French.
