In standard Basque (euskara batua) and in most of the Basque dialects, it sounds [o'dej] (oh-DEH EE).

I guess that's true, even if it sounds like ho-DAY or ho-DIE.
In Basque, just as in Spanish, all the E are [e], not [E]. So the English sound of "day" is impossible and, of course, the sound of "die" too.
