I've never seen Shakespeare in Love, but this site has VIE-o-la listed as another pronunciation. Maybe that's what they're saying, but when you say it fast, it just sounds like VIE-la.
Actually, this site has "vie-O-la" listed as the other pronunciation, as if the stress was on the second syllable. Of course, it's like you have typed, "VIE-o-la", with the stress o nthe first syllable. Which sounds almost identical to "Vie-la" when I say it at least (I'm English).

Yeah. My teachers keep deciding it's educational, so I have watched it many a time. In that movie, her character is named VIE-o-la.
