A variant of Helga (female) or Helge (male)This was my guess but I checked at http://www.nordicnames.de/flick_h/flick_h.html
Old Norse "heilagr" = holy "You sought a flower and found a fruit. You sought a spring and found a sea. You sought a woman and found a soul. You are disappointed."
"It does not become me to make myself smaller than I am." (Edith Södergran 1891-1923)

Hege is a variant of Helga, is what Ylva is trying to say. It's a simplified/altered form but it has the same meaning.Besides, Hege is in the database (click the link) - you could have looked it up yourself!

Hege is too short to be sure. It could be short for HELGE or a variant of HAGEN (which in German is related to the verb "hegen").
As a biblical name (Persian I presume) it is a variant of HEGAI. This name is found in Esther 2,3.8.15 in both spellings. Here it is a masculine name, but SEIBICKE* states, it can be both masculine or feminine. I don't know any Persian, so all I can do is quote Schumacher**: "1. beholder, 2. he who owns beautiful cows, 3. the quiet one".
* Wilfried Seibicke: Historisches Deutsches Vornamenbuch I-IV, 2000 ff. (not an expert on biblical names though)
** Heinz Schumacher: Die Namen der Bibel und ihre Bedeutung im Deutschen, Heilbronn 1958 (not necessarily a very reliable book, I found)
The name seems to be extremely rare. (Obviously it has nothing to do with the name of the biblical prophet HAGGAI, who is spelled with a Chet, not a He in the beginning.)
