They pronounce it, all right, in the same was as English people pronounce the i in addition. The t + i makes a sh sound, and in Italian the g and i together make a j sound.
So Gia would sound pretty much like Jah, which I don't see as a recommendation.

I pronounce it JEE-ah, but it's not a really hard J. It's more Italiany. :)
Yes but in Italian Gia would be "ja", you wouldn't prounounce the "i" at all (unless it were stressed), it would just be there to indicate that the "g" sound is soft.
