Pronounciation of Tarquin?
How is this name pronounced? The name listing says it is pronounced TAHR-kwin but then in one of the comments someone mentions this:
"If it is of Etruscan origin it's not pronounced tar-kwin - it'd be tar-keen or tar-koo-een because in Etruscan, the 'u' makes an 'oo' sound and the 'i' is pronounced like the 'i' in 'machine'. :)"
Does anyone know which pronounciation is more correct? Thx.

It is quite simply impossible to be certain what the Etruscan language sounded like. And, if you think about it, tahr-koo-een spoken rapidly and informally does come out rather like tahr-kwin.
All we can be sure about is the English pronunciation, which is definitely TAHR-kwin. And why not stay with a living language, rather than speculate about what might or might not have been going on 2500 years ago? Plus, in English Paris is not Paree, and in French London is Londres, and everyone copes just fine.

Thats helpful, thanks. What I couldn't figure out is whether the correct english pronounciation is tar-quinn or closer to tar-kinn. sounds like tar-quinn is right.
