Tell me if I'm pronouncing "Ione" right:
Do you pro. Ione "EE-un-," "EE-un-ee," "I-on," or "I-on-ee?" It derives from "Nonie."
If someone can tell me, I would truly appreciate it:) Thank you!

The Ione that I was at school with derived her name from the island of Iona and pronounced it eye-OH-nee.

I would pronounce it Ee-on-eeAnd I think other non-English speaking people also would do so. Ione is Greek but I guess English-speaking people pronouce the "I" as in the Scottish Iona."You sought a flower and found a fruit. You sought a spring and found a sea. You sought a woman and found a soul. You are disappointed."
"It does not become me to make myself smaller than I am." (Edith Södergran 1891-1923)

I think you have the direction of the derivation backwards -- Nonie would be derived from Ione. I think that most scholars would you use the three syllable pronunciation "eye-OH-nee" in English. But there are a great many American women who have borne this name who have pronounced it in two syllables as "eye-OWN."

I thought to pronounce it I-oh-nee like in "HERMIONE."
That's one of the reasons why I asked:)
