Just been reading reasons for Margaret becoming Peggy &c. Surely the most likely reason is that eg Meg if unvoiced sounds like Peg.

I believe it's actually because in the middle ages it was common to put different letters at the beginning of nicknames to make new nicknames. That's also how you get Dick from Richard and Bill from William.
