help with background
Hi i am trying to find the background for the name Nirah.
Its pronounced "NY Rah"
Its my great-grandmothers name, my grandmother, mother and my middle name and i would like to name my unborn Nirah if it a girl.
All we know is the name goes back to my great-grandmothers great-grandmother (so my 4x great-grandmother)
My family thinks it may belong to Aboriginal history as my whole family on my mother's siter is full'blooded Aborigines.
Any help would be great.
Thanks

There is a female Maori name Ngaire that is pronounced something like nye-ree or nye-reh. It is usally spelled Nyree when Anglosized. Nirah could be another English version of it. The meaning is uncertain, behindthename says that it is possibly "flaxen". Nyree Dawn Porter was an actress (born Ngaire in New Zealand). There is also the name Ngaio (pronounced like ny-oh) that has several meanings according to the Oxford Dictonary of First Names. The Dictionary gives the primary meaning as "clever" and behindthename says it is a type of tree.

I do not know about Aboriginal names but there is a Hebrew name Nira/Nirah. There is also Susan Nirah Jaffee mentioned in the credits of "King of Queens".
