Re: meaning of name

In India it is a pet form of names having the syllable -nit- in them. The suffix -u is a `love' diminutive (usually implying affection when used between adults) in a lot of Indian speech: I do not know its precise origin, but it has obvious hypocoristic uses like here. For examples of the actually names with the -nit- in it, see my previous posts: http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=625435&board=gen and http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=337425&board=gen
