Selita is a misspelling of Celita, Spanish nickname of Marcela (Marcela > Marcelita > Celita) or of Celia (Celia > Celita).

Celina (sometimes misspelled as Selina) is a full name from Latin origin (Caelina), but it could be used as nickname of Marcelina or of Marcela (Marcela > Cela > Celina), from where the erroneus bond between Celina and Selita as variant forms.

Hispanic First Names by Richard D. Woods interprets Selita as a variation of Celina. Whether that's correct or not, since it's in his book we know that it has been used in the USA, because all the names in Woods' book were compiled from baptismal records from the archdiocese of San Antonio in Texas, supplemented with data from phone directories and the New Mexico Geneaological Society.

In a name the suffix "ita" means that it's a pet form...
Perhaps the rule taken to make a pet form of Sela or any name with the "sela" sound.
