Can anyone tell me and meaning and/or origin of this name?

I was at school with a little girl named Bellamie - so her parents were fussy about their French genders! Lovely friend, in French ... I've always liked it.There's also Bonamy/Bonami/Bonamie = good friend. Bonamy Dobree was a literary critic.

fuzzy about genders but only half way.
bel ami = male,
belle amie = female.bellamie or bellamy = grammatically wrongsame for the other one, for female it should be "bonne amie".Just as additional info :)Seeing that Amy though is a form of "Aimée", maybe Bellamy is supposed to mean "Belle Aimée" = "beautiful Beloved" or "beautiful and beloved".

South Africans are notoriously bad at French - odd, since we're very proud of our French Huguenot immigrants who kick-started the wine industry. You often see well-intentioned spellings like Charl, because Charles "looks English", and because in Afrikaans a final -e is pronounced, diminutives like Annet occur. So, I'd imagine that Bellamy was taken from the surname, and that the (apparent!) presence in it of Amy did no harm at all ...I've never seen Bonamy/i/ie used as a female name, but that proves nothing. The world is large.

Bellamy is a surname.
Try the surname board!&I found this here, http://last-names.net/surname.asp?surname=Bellamy(origin: Local) From Bellesme, a town of France; or it may be Belami, French, a dear and excellent friend; from bel, fair or beautiful, and ami, a friend or companion.
