Aleydis

Hi shangrila_la,
Aleydis is a form of Adelheid (English form: Adelaide). When Adelheit got latinized, it became Adalheidis, and the contracted form is Aleidis (variant spelling: Aleydis).
It could have happened the other way round as well: Aleid is a Low German short form of Adelheid. The latinized form of Aleid is Aleidis (variant spelling: Aleydis).
The German pronunciation is: ah-LIE-dis.

That name does look to me like a form of Adelaide (and aaaaall the other variants, hehe), though it's one I don't believe I've seen before. I would pronounce it as it's spelled...
not -dis but -is ;-)
Hi Chrisell,
In this case, it is no 'dis'-ending but an 'is'-ending as it is a Latinized form of Adelheid or Aleid.
There are many Scandinavian names with a 'dis'-ending which look quite similar, but which are not related to Aleydis, e.g. Adis, Agdis, Aldis, Alfdis, Alvdis, Ardis, Arndis, Asdis.
