It's not linked to Mary. It's a Welsh name, although according to this site the meaning isn't clear. It always reminded me of the sea though. But it is also originally a masculine name, even though most people use it on girls now.
Not etymologically, though the similarity in sound (especially in the accent of most of the USA) has led some parents to blend the two and respell Meredith on occasion as Marideth or Maridith.
By gum! I can't think of a more depressing name for a child than Marideth.
