Sean
Sean (m) is one of my favorite names but my sister does not like it at all. She said it's pronounced SEEN (Like Dean), not like Shawn. Can anyone tell me why Sean sounds like Shawn so I could explain it to her?
Thanks in advance!

Sean, spelt in its Irish form is: Seán. The accent on the a means the name is drawn out when you speak it, and a lot of names in Irish that begin with 'S' usually are pronounced with a letter h after the S - for example, Seamus, Sile, Sinead, etc.
so that SEEN becomes SHEEN and then when you drag the accented a, the name sounds like SHAWN. I don't know if I've explained that very well, but hope it helps.

I'm not quite sure what you mean. Irish is a different language, so it doesn't follow English pronunciation rules, in the same way that French doesn't, Spanish doesn't...
I mean, you wouldn't say Diego as DY-go, would you? Or Juan as Joo-an? So why should Sean be SEEN?
Hope that helps.
