I don't know if this is of any interest to anybody, but Jack was a pirate word for a flag or a sailor. Could this explain why so many pirates were called Jack (both real and fictional)? Just a random thought...

The British flag is the Union Jack but only when it's on a ship, it's the Union Flag anywhere else.

Is that true? If it is, that's depressing...I've lived in Britain for almost 15 years and never heard it called the Union Flag.

I know how you feel. A neighbour told me a few years ago. I've only ever heard it refered to as the Union Jack. Everyone calls it the Union Jack anyway.
Going slightly of topic, I can't really remember our local church flying it from the mast, it's usually St George's Cross.
Anyway, yes, apparently it's only the Union Jack when it's on a ship.
