The Arabic word for sun is indeed shams/shems, but I don't know whether it's used a a name.

Shams Pahlavi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shams_Pahlavi) was an Iranian princess, eldest sister of the last Iranian Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. It's not unheard of for Iranians to use names derived from Arabic.
(Another example of Iranian-from-Arabic naming is Fawzieh Jahanbani (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shahnaz_Pahlavi), daughter of the former Iranian princess Shahnaz Pahlavi, and thus the granddaughter of Mohammad Reza and his first wife Princess Fawzia (Fawziyya) of Egypt.)
