...is Almaz a name? I always thought it was the name of the woman in the song ("Almaz...pure and simple...born in a world where love survives") but then I figured it could just be a word. Can anybody shed light on the subject?

It's a common name for Ethiopian women and it means diamond.

It´s Russian for diamond, a loanword through Arabic, ultimately Greek adamas.

But as for first name, it is used by Caucasian nations mostly.
