No, Ayame means "iris". You're right. Some translators mix up the name translations (example, translating 'Kagome' as 'Everlasting light' rather than 'woven bamboo pattern'). If you have doubts, look Ayame up in as many Japanese-English dictionaries as you can. They'll all say it means 'iris'.

Actually, that meaning for Ayame is indeed possible. The vocabulary word ayame does mean "iris" but the girl's name can be written with kanji that translate, more or less, as "colorful girl." Almost all Japanese names can be written with a variety of kanji and have many potential "meanings."
