Katherine origins
I was looking up the origins of my name, but I found BTN's entry for Katherine lacking. What is the "Coptic name meaning 'my consecration of your name'"? I can't find anything on the web.
Also, I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts about a hypothesis I've devised.
Info from my research:
Hecate was of Anatolian origin, originating with the Carians in Asia Minor. Her name may ultimately come from the IE root *eks- 'out'. The Hekaterides were 5 Greek nymphs who, with their 5 brothers, had 100 wonderous fingers. They were sometimes associated with Hecate. Hecate, however, seems older than the Hekaterides.
My hypothesis:
Perhaps the Carian "Hecate" 'far off' was simply influenced by the Greek "heka teras" 'hundred wonders' (or vise versa), and then later influenced by the Greek "katharos" 'pure', basically giving a triple meaning to this name.
