Svante (Swedish regent)
Svante is listed as the name of a Swedish regent, yet there is no other information available about this name. Could any more be said? (Gender, meaning, etc.).

Great site. Thanks a mill, Satu!
I've read that Svante is a short form of Svantopolk, a Vendish (?) name. And it is definitely male!
Thanks to you too, Ilva!
It is probably a male name of Slavic origin meaning "holy". One of the main Slavic gods is called Svantevid ("holy ruler"). A famous person bearing that name is Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius, winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1903.
Thanks for the response, Evaria. Very complete!
Originally, I had wondered whether it was at all related to the Frisian woman's name Swantje (small swan/kleiner Schwan). I could not have been further from the truth!
