Coelbren is a village on the edge of the south wales (u.k.) coalfield.
The original meaning of the name is apparently lost in welsh history. Some say it comes from an ancient game played in the "Mabinogion" where lots or sticks are cast
I've been trying to get more info myself but unfortunatley not much joy.
There is of course the "Coelbren" alphabet

It is a Welsh word...Your daughter may have been thinking of Old King Cole, a nursery rhyme character.Coelbren would be properly pronounced coylbren in Welsh, not cole-bren.

Which country? The only British kings were James or Charles plus the 1600s and Medieval times were completely different eras as were the celtic times. Medieval kings were Henry, Edward, John, Richard, Harold, William.
There is however a Welsh village called Coelbren so maybe it is Welsh in origin.

I can find no references to a "King Coelbren". However "Coelbren y Beirdd" is a welsh alphabet style of disputed antiquity. See http://www.arthurinamerica.com/archives/alphabet_intro.html
