It is always tempting to come up with theories based on word similarities like the poster Liam did when he said that "luca" probably derives from "light".I tried to verify this. Playing around with the best Romanian-English online dictionary that I could find, at
http://www.transilvania.info/Dictionary/dictionary.php?lang=3
did not turn up "luca" as meaning something with light in modern Romanian. The name Luca itself in Italian which after all is a Romance language just like Romanian does not derive from "light" either, as can be seen right here on BtN:
http://www.behindthename.com/php/view.php?name=luca-1And after all the "a" at the end of Raluca might just be the normal "a" of female names in Romance languages: There seems to be a male name Raluk in Romanian which could be the male form of Raluca/Raluka, and if this is indeed so who can tell that Raluk derives from Raluca by dropping the a, and not the other way round? For me there is no support in sight for the "light theory" of Raluca.By the way: For researching Raluca I tried to find the usual "baby name" sites, only in Romanian instead of English. After quite a lengthy search, surprisingly, I did not find a single one. Instead I only found one particular list of Romanian name origins that was copied over and over. One copy can be found here:
http://www.geocities.com/athens/delphi/5647/divtc05.htmOf course Raluca is not among the names on the list...
