The village of Loxley was also known as "Locksley" and "Locksleah" at various points in history, most likely from "Lock's lea", or "Lock's meadow". The name "Lock" often refers to a person who lived near or within some sort of enclosure and, during the the 11th and 12th centuries in England (Robin Hood's time), many villages were enclosed with fences for protection.
