Veruca
With the remake of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory getting so much buzz, I realized that I'm actually quite fond of the name (not the character) Veruca, however, I can't find anything about it.Is it a valid name, or something Roald Dahl made up when writing the book? If it is valid, what are it's origins, meaning, and if possible, popularity.

As stated below, its a type of wart - Dahl picked the name because he wanted something negative for the not-exactly-a-ray-of-sunshine character!

Well when looking for a meaning I did find out there was some sort of werewolf in an episode of Buffy named Veruca. I know my dad watched that show alot and most of the names in the show are real english names, some of them are just not used very often. So I don't know if that means if you looked hard enough you could find the meaning or if Joss Whedon just liked the name Veruca after seeing or reading charlie and the chocolate factory. I mean the real reason why it might be so hard to find the meaning could be that whenever you do a search you get so many charlie and the chocolate factory related stuff and basically nothing else that it's alot harder to find the something elses that could be holding the info you need. Well anyway good luck.

I have heard of Veruka (with a k) being a pet form of Vera or Veronica.
I also heard about a woman naming her daughter Veruca Nine, for Veruca Salt and her own (the mom's) artist name (something Nine).

I will venture to say the meaning has to do with the colour green or something which can grow.

If you like it but shudder (rightly!) at the meaning, you might enjoy Verushka instead. Just click on the link ...

Aaargh!Sorry - no link ... anyway, it's a Slavic nickname form of Vera. Which is clickable.

Hmmm well with most names there are ways to make fun of them and if there are no ways to make fun of their name mean kids and people will still pick on them some other way if not through their name. So I always say if you like a name, name them that except in some cases, like when I heard about this lady naming her daughter Placenta. Not many people are going to know that Verruca is a kind of wart or hillock. But most people know what a Placenta is. Here is the full definition though of Verruca, not Veruca.Main Entry: ver·ru·ca
Pronunciation: v&-'rü-k&
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural ver·ru·cae /-(")kE, -"kI, -"sI/
Etymology: Latin, wart, hillock; akin to Lithuanian virsus summit and probably to Old English wearte wart -- more at WART
1 : a wart or warty skin lesion
2 : a warty elevation on a plant or animal surface

Well, knowing the character, that certainly sounds correct. Guess that one's out. :)

In the book, Willy Wonka makes a rude comment about the name "veruca" sounding like the name of a wart, and I was one of those weird children who went straight to a dictionary and looked it up :-D. I'm amazed though that some people who read the book missed the comment and named their daughters that anyway! I'm so glad you asked someone.

heheAren't you the intellectual one? Places a "Dictionary Queen" party hat on Chrisell's head. I never look things up, I just yell for whoever is nearby and ask them what it means. Usually they don't know either though, so your method is much more effective(correct use?), I'm sure. I'm pathetic.-Seda*
