Someone who knows the meanings?
Two of my favorite books are "Material World" and "Women in the material world", big photo books in which you can visit families from all over the world. But...since I'm a name freak, I'd like to know the meanings of all the names in the books! :) I wonder if you can help me...
MALI: Girls called Tata, Pai and Toure, boys called Kontie and Mama. The family belongs to the Bozo people.
ETHIOPIA: Girl called Like (LEE-kay), boys called Teshome, Mamoosh and Kebebe. The family belongs to the Oromo people.
JAPANESE: Girl called Maya (all I find about this name is "an ancient people in Mexico and Guatemala", but I doubt this is the Japanese meaning of the name! :))
CHINESE: Male names: Ba Jiu, Wen De and Wen Bin. Female names: Yu Xian, Jian Chun and Xi.
INDIA: Man called Bachau, girl called Arti
BHUTAN: Male names: Namgay, Kinley, Chato, Tandin, Kado. Female names: Bangum, Zekom, Sangay Zam
THAILAND: Male names: Boontham, Visith, Vichai. Female names: Buaphet, Jeeraporn
UZBEKISTAN: Kazakh girl called Zulphiya
HAITI: Male names: Dentes and Soifette. Female names: Lucemanne and Timenne
SAMOA: Male names: Auseuga, Alatupe and Uiti. Female names: Faaleo, Fuao, Laufafa and Paugata
ALBANIA: Mother and daughter called Hanke and Artila
BOSNIA: Man called Nedzad, woman called Nafja
I know this letter is silly, but...

I don't know the meanings AT All! What amazing names. But your request isn't silly at all. May I suggest that you Google for the nearest embassy or consulate of these countries and contact them by letter or e-mail (if they provide their e-mail addresses to the sometimes spamming public ...)? I'm sure they'd be delighted to assist - anyone who takes an interest in their cultural life will be appreciated.
Once I taught a boy who'd been very naughty very often - juvenile court appearances etc - and was fascinated by China. The Chinese embassy near my home gave me this kid's full name in Chinese characters so he could decorate his room with it. They couldn't have been kinder.

Thank you, Anneza
I'm glad you found the names interesting! But I dunno, it seems a bit strange writing to embassys to know the meaning of some names...
But you're right, embassy people is very helpful. I live in Sweden, and in elementary school we wrote small books about a country in Europe. My best friend and I chose Greece, and wrote to the Greek embassy in Stockholm, and they sent a lot of interesting material - that was great!
