There is, however, no modern French word 'chiel'. But while googling around I noticed that the French de Chiel family is hundreds of years old so the name must be Old French, not French. I suspected that Old French chiel is the same as modern French ciel (sky, heaven). It seems that I was right because I could find pages like the following really using chiel this way:
