I am interested in the female name Deva. That is the name of my boyfriend`s mother and the name is very rare here in Slovenia, where she was born. Her ethnic background is slovenian, she doesn`t know what does her name mean but she would like to. I asked her mother and father and they don`t know either.
On this site I found Devi, which means godess in Sanskrit, but it is not quite the same name. There is also a town in Romania called Deva and the name is supposed to come from dacian word Dava-fortress.
Also, my father told me, that he knew an old woman (very old) from Bosnia, whose name was Deva and he thinks it comes from the serbian word deva meaning young girl.
I am confused which meaning is right? Do you know something more about this name?

Sorry,don't know about Deva (except that it means 'camel' in Croatian.Wanted to ask you where you live,in Slovenia or somewhere else?I'm from Croatia.

As a personal name in Slovakia, the origin is from the Slavic for 'maiden', also used for the Virgin Mary.
In Sanskrit Deva means 'god', Devi being the feminine form 'goddess'. It is used in personal names as an element, such as Devdan or Devdas, but not as a name in and of itself traditionally or in modern times by Hindus.
There are other possible origins, the Dacian 'citadel', the Latin 'holy place', etc. but none would apply to its use as a female given name in Slavic languages.

But seriously, "deva" is an old Slavic word for a girl. Today, it's preserved in the Russian "devochka", the Serbian "devojka", the Bulgarian "devoyka" (all meaning "a girl").
Deva also doubles for "a virgin" and brings connotations to Deva Maria (Virgin Mary) - in that sense, it is somewhat like Virginia. It is a really old name and I didn't know it is still used, although I know of several little Devina's (an elaborated form of the name).
