Where did you come across the name and what was the kanji used?

In Japanese names, both the hiragana (or katakana) and the kanji are important in figuring out what a name means since kanji can be pronounced in different ways depending on the precise meaning given to the kanji. Knowing the kanji makes the Japanese "experts"' jobs easier. :)
