If you're naming your son Eric Scott, then Eric is his first name and Scott his middle name. The first name is the name which the parents call their child by in daily life; when you call him to come downstairs for example, you'll yell "Eric, dinner!" instead of "Eric Scott, dinner!" Usually, parents don't call their child by his first name *plus* the middle name (the middle name is therefore hardly used).

BUT, if you *do* want to call your son by his two names, then he doesn't have 1 first name and 1 middle name, but two first names (after all, a first name is the name the parents call their child). Usually, two first names go hyphenated --> Eric-Scott. That's more sensible and will prevent mistakes.

However, I have to say that two first names sound snobby. Your child may get teased with it.

I recommend you to give your son Eric as a first name, and Scott as a middle name. Don't call him by both names in real life, call him just Eric. :)
