Fairy
I am a girl, can I use Fairy as my first name?
Replies
how about Maeve(Mab) or Tatiana(Titania) both were names for the queen of the fairies...
Well, it might not be that appropriate...why not use some other name? There are plenty of names to choose from. I mean, why not just choose a sort of normal name? Or if you like want a name associated with a fairy, how about a name of a fairy???
or Fay.
culture gap = she's from china & wants an english name.

If she wants an English name, she can find hundreds with very little effort. Why find an English word instead?
there are numerous English words which are used as names (e.g., Grace, Hope, Mason, Hunter -- and yes, i realize some of these are surnames as well).
i saw her post on the other board asking the same question. i am not as quick as are you to assume that she/he is 'baiting' us. it is easier for me to assume that she is being sincere. if i were to respond with sarcasm (as you did), i wouldn't feel like any more intelligent, or insightful, or competent. it costs me nothing to respond sincerely.
there are enough people who use words such as fairy in hurtful ways for me to even consider perpetuating the trend.

Try Fay for yourself, dear, and leave Fairy for the gentlemen.

That sounds like an insult to homosexual men. Whatever your personal views on homosexuality, perhaps you could respect the lifestyles of others and phrase your answers in a less derogatory fashion in the future.

Oh goodie! Another one takes the bait ...
I stand by my post. Whether or not she is seriously considering using Fairy as a name has nothing to do with the fact that you came across as a bigot. I don't care if you were sarcastic - Eminem uses the same guise, and I don't buy that, either. Sarcasm isn't always funny, especially when it is insensitively directed toward those who belong to a community that has been discriminated against for the whole of human history.
If you wrote that just to get a rise out of people, then perhaps you should find a more constructive hobby - something that can't be construed as offensive.

Aw, chill out dear. To much PCness is detrimental to your sense of humor. I'm sure Anneza doesnt spend her weekends bashing gays in downtown Soweto. The gay community has to tackle with much more serious problems and threats than Anneza's charming wit.

You can use Django as far as I am concerned...
What does the name Django mean?
It would be sociably unacceptable.
I AM CONFUSED!
Why is the word "fairy" socially unacceptable? Is it a term for something in the US? I'm living in Scotland and it definitely means nothing untoward here.

it is used as an insult to gay men.
your question
eleanor:
although pansy and, to a lesser extent, nancy, have also been used as an insult to gay men, i do not believe they ever gained the "popularity" (or, virulence) of fairy (at least in the states). nancy is only used in that context very rarely these days.

I didn't think it was sociable unaccptable for that reason, but that adds to the reason.
