I always thought that Margali was of Celtic origin.If you haven't already you might want to check out Marion Zimmer Bradley's books:
The Shattered Chain & Thendara House. One of the main characters is named Margali, A derivitive of Magdalen (Margali n'ha Ysabet/Magdalen Lorne).
