Name info...
I ran across an interesting name today. I believe it is Kjar, pronounced Yar. It is a man's name. I had never heard it before and was wondering if anyone had ever heard of it. I'd like to know the ethnic background and what it means. If anyone knows, please e-mail me with your response. Thank you very much!

I've heard of the name Kjartan used in Scandinavia. Unfortunately I have no knowledge of what it means :-(

KjartanHi Lassia,Kjartan is an Icelandic name as well. It's either short for Myrkjartan, the Icelandic form of Muircheartach - a Celtic name meaning "sea" + "warrior", or it can be the Icelandic form of the Celtic name Certán. But I don't know the meaning of that one...Regards, Satu

Hi Aimee,I don't know of a name which is written Kjar and pronounced "yar". The written version looks like a short form for Kjaran which is the Icelandic form of the Celtic name Ciarán (meaning: dark, black + diminutive ending) but then it would be pronounced "kyar" (the a sounding like the a in "father")Another name which looks quite similar is Kjær, a Danish and Norwegian name, mostly used as a middle name, meaning "dear, lovely", but that's pronounced totally different - Danish: kyeh-ah (well, it's impossible to describe!!) and Norwegian: chair (no, not _really_... but I don't know how to tell you! Sorry!)I'm not sure if that helped...
