surname Stroot ?
Hi:
My paternal great-grandparents came to the U.S. from Holland. Last name is Stroot. It may have been shortened at Ellis Island. I heard a rumor years ago that the original name may have been Stroothaus. I have not been able to verify any of this information. I do know that Stroot is an unusual name in the U.S.
I'd appreciate any info...
Thanks.

Stroot maybe comes from the Dutch and Low German word "straat" which means street.
It could come from the Middle Low German word "strot" which means bushes, thicket.
"Haus" is the German word for house, if it were a Dutch name it would be "huis" instead for "Haus".
