Aria ...
These are various meanings I've come across for the name Aria, I'm not sure how many of them are actually true though. Does anyone have any information pertaining to this name.
ARIA
(Greek) "Gentle Music"
(Italian and/or German) "Song, Melody"
(Hebrew) "Lioness"
(Lithuanian) "Plough"
Possibly also from arian (Welsh) "Silver" (see Ariane)

Aria means (and is the same word as) air. And air can be both the stuff we breathe and a melody. I don't buy the Welsh connection.
Incidentally, the 'flu, avian or otherwise, originally was known as influenza dell' aria, the influence of the air. That was before people worked out about germs!

To me, it wasn't originally a name, but a word for a solo song. Like... "she sang a beautiful aria" or something. So I think the Greek and Italian/German meanings fit best.
