Archivesname suffixes in "Asterix"
Hi :)
I'd like to know why the authors of the French cartoon "Asterix" (Goscinny & Uderzo) named the English caracters with the suffix "-ax" , the Greek with the suffix "-os", the Scandinavian with the suffix "-sen" and the Egyptian with the suffix "-is". Can we say that it's because most of the people in those countries have the names ending with these suffixes? Is there any other academic reason?

According to Mrs Morrel, my latin teacher, -ix endings are celtic. For example Dumnorix in a translation (ludos funubres) I am doing at the moment. hope this is of some use.

I can only tell you something about the -sen endings. These endings are used in Denmark, Norway and in the north of Germany and in the north of the Netherlands. They come from the Scandinavian word 'son' which is the same word as in English (just with a different pronunciation).
The suffix is just added to a first name to build the last name, and in Denmark about 60 % of the last names are -sen names. In Sweden and Iceland the ending is -sson instead and in Norway you'll find both -son and -sen.
In the very north of Germany (Schleswig-Holstein) the surnames Petersen and Hansen are the most common last names.
