Balian is a very noble name. In fact the idea that it IS NOT traditional is what I like most about it.
Balian did in fact play a crucial role as a Crusader noble in the events surrounding the fall of Jerusalem in 1187 to the Muslim sultan Saladin. FYI for those who think he was a fictional name in a movie.

I love the name!!! And yes it is a real person's name from history. When I saw the movie Kingdom of Heaven, I thought that it was a great name. If I have a boy, I would definitely have this as a boy's name on my top ten list.
No opinions on this board, please. :-)

Oh, dear. In Spanish, bailan (bye-LAHN) means "they dance". It is the conjugation of the verb "bailar" (to dance) for the pronoun "ellos" (they). I really do not think this is a good name for a child. What if they made a Spanish friend or took Spanish?
The name is Balian not Bailan. The letter 'i' is in a different place.

Ooops. Sorry. *blush* Thanks!
There is a post a little ways down by LeeLou asking the same question about the name Balian and it seems like the concensus is that no one knows the origin and that no one likes the name.
I have to agree don't know the origin or history, exccept that it is a traditional last name, isn't it Orlando Blooms characters name in the movie Kingdom of Heaven??
Bad name anyway.

Yeah so I looked it up and it is the name of Orlando Blooms Character in Kingdom of Heaven. Otherwise it has no history or meaning as far as I can see.
So I am going to go out on a limb here and say that it is a "made up name" from a movie that a screenwriter created. So it has no meaning or history.

Yeah actually I just found that Balian online.
I doubt that anyone would really know who that Balian of Ibelin is and would just associate it with the movie character, who I assumed was fictional.
I really don't like the name and before using it on a child I would look up the Balian of Ibelin and see what type of person he was to see if he is worthy of naming a child after.
