name change
i am in a bit of a dilema and i wanted to get some opinions. at the end of this year i am becoming jewish. and when i do i would like to change my name to a hebrew name. i know it is not something i have to do, but i really like the idea of starting my new life with a new name. what is everyone's opinion of it?

If I were you I would adopt a "Hebrew lite" name, something like Adam or Michael. One of the things I respect the most sbout Judaism is that, unlike Christianity and Islam, it does not go around converting people. You are probably the only person I heard who converted to Judaism...one does not convert -- or ratherm cannot convert -- to Judaism "just like that" so if I am not too indiscreet, what's the scoop?

i have been working on this for a long time. i am just getting to the end of my conversion. i have been thinking about which name to choose because as i was told by the rabbis i am working with i do need to pick one. people can convert to judaism. there are alot of people who have. thye just don't usually go out looking for people to convert. this was entirely done by my choice. i even know some people who converted. my brother-in-law did, a friend of my father's did, and a few memebers of the class i was in. it is nothing unusual. but these people did it because they wanted to not because anyone forced them too. same goes for me.

I think it's kinda cool!
I would love to change my name to something less common like Kathryn or even Reina (this is my friend's name and I LOVE IT!)
Plus,I like the name Rachel and if I were getting a Hebrew name well I believe Rachel is Hebrew and you get my drift
But that's really cool!
What did you have in mind?Jessica

i have given it alot of thought, but i'm not sure what i want to use. i really love oldfashioned names. i would like to use something that would work in english as well as it does in hebrew. rachel is a good example of it. in english i'm sure you know how it's pronounced, but in hebrew it's pronounced with a hard ch sound. much like the ch in chanukah.

I think it's an interesting idea. Perhaps you could find a nice hebrew name that fits with your current first name so that people who've known you for years can still call you by the name they know you as, but new friends can call you by your new hebrew name. Speaking from experience, it's rather difficult to get people remeber your new name all the time. Just an idea. It's a noble idea to start a new life with a new name. Good Luck.

i have thought about that, unfortunately i don't now of anyone who would be able to pronounce the hebrew version of my name. It's Michal. i think it's pretty, but i know i will be called Michael. i have been thinking about this for along time. i can accept family to still call me by my old name. i just don't know what to change it to
