It's my friend's birthday soon and, I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S HER NAME!!! I can't write a card or anything!! it just sounds something like JD/jay-dee. are they her initials or what? Jadee or something? I haven't known her for very long and I'm too embarrassed to ask, and partly because I'm going to surprise her on her birthday. none of my other friends know her and I don't know any of her friends so I have absolutely NO way of knowing. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Try the direct approach - say: Won't you tell me how you spell your name, because I'd hate to make a mistake on your birthday card?
The worst that can happen is a rather intent stare as she spells an obvious name in an obvious way - but that way you'll be certain, and if we guess, you might as well guess for yourself.

Dont make a mountain out of a molehill. It best to ask her directly, for it could be anything! If you are nevertheless embarassed, write "J-D" -- which is kinda cutesy -- and work on your self-confidence.
