Does anyone know the origin and meaning of the last name Rhoades? Is there a way I can find out for *free* more information about it, maybe a coat of arms, etc.?

This is an English topographic surname (Yorkshire mainly) denoting someone who lived in a clearing in the woodland derived from the Old English 'rod'. It's believed that the spelling has been influenced by the Greek island of Rhodes.
