KOBBER Denmark
For 20 or more generations in Hjorring Denmark our family has named one son
Kobber
as their middle name.
The meaning is the element copper.
It is an ancient name from Jutland.
Anyone have any ideas as to the meaning?
Thanks

Being a Dane...Kobber means "copper". And it's absolutely no ancient name, at least no first name, from Jutland since it's something. I should know since I'm from the middle of Jutland (Or Jylland). Born, bred, raised and lived here my entire life. And Hjørring (Hjorring or Hjoerring) is in the north of Jylland. And it's no last name either. I don't really know where they got Kobber from, because I've only heard it used in the sense, that it's a metallic art. It might be a local thing up there, but I doubt it.

Hej Charlie Blue,There are some people (12) in Denmark whose surname is Kobber./Satu

Hmm...They may have German ancestors, since Kynaston found the surname in low German. That could be the answer. I couldn't find Kobber in my extended book of Danish first- and lastnames. The best book dealing with lastnames here. Well there are some which have Kobber as the first part, but they're always combined with something other. But no single handedly Kobber. *Gets nosy and heads off to the Danish statistic database for first- and lastnames, to check out the data on Kobber*

German ancestors is a good theory. The Low German form of that name is Kopper.
Unfortunately, there are no name statistics about German first- and surnames anywhere (DATENSCHUTZ!!!) but when searching www.telefonbuch.de, I didn't find any Kobber with bb in Germany at all, but some Koppers! So probably the Kopper surname became Kobber in Denmark.Hilsen fra

Here it is...http://www.dst.dk/HomeUK.aspx (I've converted it into English for you.)Go to the upper left hand corner under "Statistics free of charge", and you'll find the link to "Names".The English version is absolute NOT as through as the Danish one. Just so you're warned. BUT if you understand Danish, you can alway convert the site back into Danish (upper right hand corner).

I have found it used as a surname but only in Low German, not Danish.

I don't really understand your question, you are right, it means "copper". Is that all you wanted to know or was there something else. :)

the name means copper,yes
but there is supposed to be a legend connected with the name, I found this from a guy in Denmark who toild me his father knew the legend and would pass my email to him....I didn't hear back from him sadly.
so I am curious as to why copper would become a given name....There are no copper mines in Denmark...,,maybe a Viking brought home copper from a voyage and took that name as a nickname?Hope someone knows

Ah, I see. Sorry about that. :)
I have no idea about any legend regarding the name sadly, I hope someone else can help with that.
But when looking into the surname Kopper which is apparently a Low German surname, it said that it denoted someone who worked with copper.
Therefore it is possible that someone brought in copper and this name was given to the person who worked with it. I'm sorry i can't be of more help.
Good luck. :)
