Hello Heather,
"The Never Ending Story" is a book written by the German author Michael Ende (1929-1995). The book is from 1979. One of the characters in the book is this boy Atreyu (written Atreju in the German original) who tries to safe the fantasia-world. The name is probably just a fantasy-fiction of the author Michael Ende.

How odd! I have been trying to name my son this same name, and I came upon this letter trying to find the meaning as well. I really like the name because it is not common. In trying to find a meaning for this name, I found it means "son of everybody". I don't know the origin. Kind of appropriate for the son of everybody to be chosen to save the world from apathy. :-)
