I don't know if this helps, but in Spanish, we pronounce the city's name "Génova", and the "g" has a sound similar to our "j".
The original Italian is "Genova", with the "ge" having kind of a "zh" sound like in the French word "jour".
I am not an expert on etymologies, though... but perhaps that will set somebody on the right track?
