The rock type 'Shale' has actually become an emerging name, usually strictly in males, ive yet to meet a female Shale yet.
I have already seen spelling variations come out of the name, one of which is Shail, which to my guess is where your name could of come from.
For more information on the word shale, or the rock type i suggest consulting a dictionary, and/or an encyclopedia.
To find out what the word besides its dictionary definition might mean, try finding out what the word stems from, what language and what that word means.
If you really want to go overly indepth trace back that word and u might eventually find something compleatly unrelating to rock that u can tell ppl thats what ur name stems from.
If you decide to do that search, please keep us informed, I love geology, and languages just as much as etymology so it should be interesting
