When did people start to have "Middle Names" and why?
As above, earliest known examples?

moreI wanted to add that Moshe had 9 middle names, and Miriam a good number too. :)

There are examples of middle names (sometimes 2, 3, 4...) since Biblical times, for purposes of indentification (the son of Eliyahu could be Hillel Eliyahu), to honour several people (the grandson of a Meshullam and a Yosef could be Yosef Meshullam), or because the names are given by different people (one by the dad, one by the mom...).

I see your in France, ever chanced upon the surname "Herivan" is this a French name? regards "Bagpus" (Paul) and friends.

Herivan? Never heard of it... It doesn't sound French, I would say Spanish?
