The e on Clarke
I know that the name Clark has come from clergy, or something similar but I was wondering if anybody had any insight as to why some have e's and some don't. Is there a historical reason, or is it something that has just developed for no apparant reason?
Any insight is appreciated.

Because spelling wasnt standardised until fairly recently in history and therefore different variations have appeared over time, espeically as different level of literacy in different areas as well as regional spellings.
